When most people think about ocean cruises, the initial picture is a large cruise ship.  Although the mass market ships are becoming larger and larger, there are more luxurious vessels are much smaller.  Many large ships can carry over 4,000 passengers.  The smaller vessels are designed to carry only a couple hundred passengers. 

Most ocean-going cruise ships represent a “floating city on the sea”. Entertainment on board includes such things as Las Vegas-style cabarets and Broadway-type shows.  Casinos, spas, discos, lounges, fine dining and specialty culinary experiences can also be enjoyed.  For the kids they have full-blown water parks, kid-camps, rock wall climbing and a lot of other fun activities.

Depending on the destination and itinerary, ocean cruise ships will stop at a number of ports of call. Passengers will have the opportunity to visit the local markets and other attractions.  

You are able to participate in as many or as few activities as you choose on your cruise. In spite of the large number of options available, you have the freedom to choose your own activity schedule.

There are several things you will want to consider before booking a cruise..  

Where do you want to go?  Different cruise lines have different itineraries from local to world-wide.

How much time do you have on the ship?  You can choose a cruise that lasts anywhere from 3 days to several weeks.

Do you have specific dates in mind?  It is important to know that there can be a big price difference for the exact same cruise taken on different dates.

What is the purpose of your cruise?  A romantic vacation?  Multi-generational get together or a quick and impulsive getaway?  Are you wanting an opportunity to explore a new and different country?  Maybe it’s for a special occasion or just for the fun of it. Your choice of cruise line and destination will vary according to your wants.

Do you prefer a smaller, more intimate cruise ship or a larger, more populated one?  Cruise ships can have from a few hundred to several thousand passengers.
